BYU NAMES NEW DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE

After spending more than 12 years as associate director of Brigham Young University's public communications office, Brent Harker has been named by university officials as director of public communications.

His promotion follows Margaret Smoot's decision to step down as director in order to pursue private business interests.Harker graduated from Utah State University in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. Later that year, he joined the staff of the Deseret News, then left for The Lethbridge Herald, in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1976. There he worked as a reporter, assistant city editor and region editor.

Harker joined the BYU Public Communications staff in 1983 as assistant director.
