During the past few months, we have become very concerned with the local predominance of the Republican Party, which has effectively turned Utah into a one-party state. The arrogant and out-of-touch state Legislature provides a few examples.
First and most serious, the Legislature passed SB287 at the last moment and without public discussion. This bill ended minimum mandatory sentencing for criminals convicted of child sex crimes. Not only was this a blatant affront to moral principles, but it endangers children by letting criminals out early.Second, the Legislature failed to enact meaningful lobbying reform. During this last session, $180,000 was spent entertaining lawmakers. That's more than $1,500 per lawmaker! Only $4,000 of that $180,000 is publicly accounted for.
Third, the Utah Senate refused to consider a bill that would prohibit handgun purchases by individuals determined to be violent in domestic violence protective orders. This bill could protect many of the women who are the victims of fatal domestic violence.
In short, the Republicans, through exclusive control of the government, are now out of touch with the people of Utah. Although Utahns do not, as a rule, favor the Democratic Party nationally, we urge voters in the future to support moderate and conservative Democrats in future Utah legislative races. Only then can Utahns have a balanced, more-responsible government.
