Q. How does a boat keep from sinking while at sea?

A. A boat is designed to have buoyancy. Archimedes, a Greek scientist who lived more tha 21 centuries ago, figured out how, and it was known as Archimedes' principle. Basically, in order for a boat to float, it has to push out water that is equal to its weight. That means the total weight. That means the total weight of the wood or steel, the people, and anything else in the boat. By creating lots of space for air, which is much lighter than water, designers can even get metal to float. Some things are less dense than water - cork, for example.
