Republicans get mixed reviews for their performance in Congress, with a slim majority saying the GOP is moving the country in the right direction, although the approval rating for Congress is the same as a year ago, according to a poll released Friday.
While 32 percent of those polled say they favor proposals in the Republicans' "Contract With America," 47 percent say they are unaware of them, and 9 percent have no opinion. Twelve percent oppose the contract, according to the USA Today-CNN-Gallup poll.Fifty-three percent say the GOP's proposed policies would take the country in the right direction, and 52 percent rate the Republicans' first 100 days as the majority in Congress as a success, according to the poll.
Still, the approval rating for Congress, 31 percent, is nearly the same as a year ago, 29 percent. The disapproval rating is almost the same, too: 61 percent now and 63 percent last March.
Eighty percent say political gridlock in Washington is the same or worse than in recent years, and 64 percent say the Republicans are engaged in "politics as usual," the poll said.
The poll, conducted by telephone March 27-29, surveyed 1,015 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
