5-CITY CHASE ENDS WHEN SPIKES CUT PICKUP'S TIRES

A high-speed chase on State Street through five cities ended early Saturday when the driver of a stolen truck drove across metal spikes left on the road by the Utah Highway Patrol.

Orem police officer Steve Swenson noticed a Toyota pickup with the price sticker on the window near 500 N. State. He tried to pull the truck over, but the driver sped away, said Orem police spokesman Sgt. Gary Downey.Swenson chased the driver through Orem, Lindon, Pleasant Grove, American Fork and Lehi at speeds of 90 mph, he said. At Bull River Road in Lehi, UHP troopers spread spikes on the street that flattened the truck's tires and brought it to a stop.

Downey said the 18-year-old driver had a key to the truck made during an earlier test-drive of the vehicle at an Orem auto dealer. The driver was in the process of putting license plates on the truck when Swenson spotted him, he said.
