Was it Halloween or April Fools Day?
"Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh on the 1996 presidential ballot!" blared the front-page headline in Saturday's Marietta Daily Journal, a suburban Atlanta newspaper in the Republican House speaker's congressional district. The editors who made up the April Fools article had GOP presidential contender Phil Gramm shaking in his boots.
"Wow!" the newspaper had Sen. Gramm saying. "I'm shocked. Well, my momma always said, `If you're a pig, you've got to wallow in the mud.' "
Gingrich later complimented the editors but said not all his fans were pleased by the faux news: "My mother was pretty bummed out."
