T-VILLE BACK IN FAMILIAR TERRITORY

A closer look at this week's Deseret News high school sports rankings:

Baseball

Taylorsville is right back where it's used being - on top.

After somewhat of a shaky start this season, the three-time defending champion Warriors (12-6) have jelled and are gearing up for the upcoming state playoffs.

Several other 5A teams heading into the final full week of regular season action are playing very well. Viewmont (13-4) won three games to move into the No. 3 spot, while Orem (14-5) made its way back into the top five at No. 4 with an impressive 13-2 win over Mountain View, which dropped to the fifth spot.

Pleasant Grove , Pine View and Manti each retained their top spots in the other three classifications this week.

Boys soccer

With a five-game win streak highlighted by Thursday's 3-0 shutout over Hillcrest, Brighton makes a two-spot jump into 5A's No. 2 position. Also making a return to the rankings is Roy at No. 3 with a 9-2 record. Bingham jumped into the fifth-spot after handing last week's No. 5 team, West Jordan, its first region loss.

In the 4A ranks, Timpview steadily improved into the second-ranked position after avenging an earlier loss to Provo, who's now ranked at No. 5. After suffering two early region losses, third-ranked Sky View is shaping up to be the powerful team most coaches expected it to be.

Four teams from Region 9 stand in this week's rankings, including the Delta Rabbits (7-3) who rocket into the No. 2 spot. Also ranked for the first time is Snow Canyon (5-2-2) with a No. 4 ranking.

Softball

The Taylorsville Warriors were the only team to break into the rankings this week, moving into the No. 4 spot in Class 5A. The Warriors earned the spot after recording a pair of stunning victories over top-ranked Bingham and then fourth-ranked West Jordan on successive days.

Meanwhile, first-year school Snow Canyon moved into the top spot in Class 3A, still undefeated in region play. The Warriors moved into the spot after Carbon lost twice and North Sanpete once.

Bingham, Box Elder and Manti held on to their top spots for another week. Spanish Fork moved up to No. 2 in Class 4A, while San Juan lost a pair of games and dropped from No. 2 to No. 5. in Class 2A.

This week's top games: No. 4 Pleasant Grove at No. 2 Spanish Fork on Tuesday; No. 5 West Jordan at No. 1 Bingham on Thursday; No. 3 Fremont at Bonneville on Friday.
