A fifth edition has been published of "History of Art" (Abrams, $60), the detailed survey of art in the Western tradition by H.W. Janson, first published in 1962.

Over its 960 pages - that's about 100 more than 1991's fourth edition - is organized a massive body of enlightenment, as before. It now incorporates more illustrations, updated texts, extra maps and timelines. The revision has been written by art historian Anthony F. Janson, following in the footsteps of his father, who died in 1982. This edition has more changes than all previous ones combined since the work first appeared, Janson writes in his preface.

He acknowledges the influence of radical new art-historical approaches, such as feminism, multi-culturalism and deconstruction, but also warns against letting ideology cloud the search for truth.
