REST-STOP SIGN PILFERER SENDS IT BACK TO STERN

Howard Stern's rest stop plaque is now resting closer to home.

Stern told radio listeners Tuesday that the men who pilfered the plaque from an interstate rest stop had mailed it back to him. First-term New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman had promised to name a rest stop for Stern in exchange for his endorsement.Whitman spokesman Carl Golden thought that Stern would stick the plaque in the men's room at his studio. "It's a fitting final chapter in this tired saga," Golden said.

The $1,000 black-and-silver sign, which shows a caricature of Stern peeking out of an outhouse, disappeared less than a week after it was put up.
