About a dozen Salt Lake police officers and a sheriff's helicopter were tracking a reported kidnapping and shooting Wednesday morning in the area surrounding the University of Utah.

Emergency dispatchers received a call about 9 a.m. from a family in Centerville reporting that a female acquaintance and her grandmother were being held at gunpoint by two men on the northeast side of Salt Lake City. The reported victims were calling from a cellular phone. The girl said repeatedly she could see the block "U" on the hillside. She couldn't provide the specific address because she was from out of town.

The caller also told the Centerville family she had traveled to Salt Lake City in a rented vehicle from Las Vegas to pick up a child in the Avenues area.

She said at least one shot had been fired and someone was bleeding. Officers were cruising the area at press time. An attempt-to-locate bulletin was issued for a white, four-door Oldsmobile. It was unknown if the vehicle was a sport utility vehicle or sedan.

Police tried to call the cellular phone but were unsuccessful.
