A convicted murderer escaped from prison by clinging beneath a truck for more than 120 miles, then was captured after a passing trucker spotted him.
Darrell Kelley saw a small man covered with grease crawl from under the truck when it stopped to make a delivery on the outskirts of El Centro.Peter Bergne, 52, had crawled under the truck at the Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa, about 10 miles south of San Diego.
After police arrived, Bergne was asked if he had just escaped from prison. "He came up with about three names in about as many minutes," said Capt. Lawrence Hamp.
It was only after police captured Bergne that prison officials realized one of their inmates had escaped Monday.
Bergne was serving 15 years to life for strangling a girlfriend who rejected him.
