Unlike most years, the Jewish Passover coincides this year with the Christian celebration of Easter for most of Christianity.
Utah's local Jewish community will begin its observance of Passover at sundown on Friday, April 14. The eight-day celebration commemorates the liberation of the Jewish people from Egyptian bond-age, and is designed to recreate the events of the redemption. Highlighting the observance is the traditional Seder or dinner, complete with symbolic foods and the accompanying liturgy, the Haggadah.While unleavened bread, or matzah, is used as part of the Seder, the custom goes beyond the meal. All leavened bread, or hametz, is removed from practicing Jewish homes prior to the beginning of the celebration, and only unleavened bread products are used during the eight-day commemoration.
Congregation Kol Ami will host a community Seder on Saturday, April 15, with special Passover services that day at 9 a.m., April 16 at 9 a.m., April 20 at 7:45 p.m., and April 21-22 at 9 a.m. Other activities include a sale of foods, gifts and beverages for Passover, and the collection and donation of hametz to charity.
