A CLOSER LOOK AT THIS WEEK'S PREP RANKINGS

A closer look at this week's Deseret News high school rankings:

Baseball

While Alta , Pleasant Grove , Pine View and Manti remain perched at the top of their respective classifications, the state's hottest team this week was Murray.

The second-ranked Spartans tallied a total of 49 runs in just three games to run their record to 12-2. So far this season, Murray's sluggers are hitting a sizzling .360 as a team.

Only two new teams entered this week's version of the rankings. Mountain View, 6-3, beat and replaced Orem at the No. 5 spot in the 5A poll. The Bruins have an impressive start in Region 4 with a 3-0 record. Meanwhile, 2A defending champion Millard, 5-2, moved up to the fifth rung on the 2A ladder.

Manti (11-0) and Kanab (9-0), 1-2 in 2A, are the only two teams with spotless records.

Boys soccer

With a spotless 8-0 overall record that includes wins over 5A powers Clearfield and Bountiful, No. 1-ranked Woods Cross of 4A remains the strongest and most consistent team in the state. The Wildcats jumped to 4-0 in Region 7 Friday night with a crushing 4-1 victory over second-ranked Olympus. Oly, now ranked at No. 3, stands in a deadlock with Provo (2nd) and Timpview (4th) with a 7-1 record for each team.

Class 5A is more of a crap shoot despite No. 1 Viewmont (7-1) being the only stable force in the pack. Behind the defense of Viking goalkeeper John Morris, Viewmont has survived two-straight OT matches, and has only been scored on once in mighty Region 2.

Softball

The Carbon Dinos became the first team this season to unseed a No. 1 ranked team from its lofty position. After defeating top-ranked North Sanpete this week, Carbon jumped into the top spot of the 3A ranks and dropped the Hawks down to No. 2. Uintah enters the 3A poll at No. 5, replacing Delta.

Bingham and Alta remained 1-2 in the 5A poll while West Jordan and Hillcrest switched spots after the Huskies lost to Alta on Thursday. Meanwhile, Bonneville jumped into the No. 5 spot in place of Highland.

The 4A ranks saw Box Elder continue its stronghold on the top spot while Region 5 rival Bear River moved into No. 2. Spanish Fork entered the poll at No. 3 after defeating Pleasant Grove and improving to 3-0 in Region 8.

Despite its one-run loss to San Juan, Grand held on to its No. 1 ranking in Class 2A. The win helped the Broncos jump from fifth to third. Manti remained at No. 2, while Millard and Morgan each fell one spot.
