U.S. ENVOY TALKS WITH ASSAD ON PEACE PROCESS

U.S. envoy Dennis Ross met with President Hafez Assad for six hours Saturday, trying to break a deadlock in Syrian-Israeli peace talks over security arrangements on the occupied Golan Heights.

Officials gave scant details of their talks, but there was little indication of any significant progress. Negotiations, which began in 1991, have been at a stalemate for more than a year.Assad's spokesman, Jibran Jourieh, said the discussions had dealt with "ideas (that) could contribute" to pushing the peace process forward."

Kourieh noted that Assad had stressed Israel's "attempts to evade the requirements of peace," surrendering war-won territory for peace.
