Golf great Ben Hogan, who will be honored this week at the Colonial National Invitation Tournament he won five times, went home Monday after an operation to remove a tumor from his colon.
Hogan, 82, was released from All Saints Hospital after a 15-day stay for emergency surgery. He will recuperate at his Fort Worth home with the assistance of a private nurse, said his wife, Valerie Hogan."Ben is so excited," Valerie Hogan told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "He's doing great, and the doctor feels it's better for him to be at home in more familiar surroundings.
"He's recovered from the surgery. Now, it's just a matter of getting his strength back, and the doctors think a more familiar situation will help him do that."
Hogan felt pains May 7; the next day, he underwent a six-hour surgery to remove the tumor.
Hogan won 63 PGA Tour events during his career including four U.S. Opens, two Masters titles, two PGA Championships and one British Open.
Colonial Country Club officials plan to unveil a 7-foot bronze statue of Hogan on Tuesday as part of several days of festivities in his honor leading up to this weekend's tournament.
Hogan won't be there, but Valerie Hogan said she plans to attend.
"Ben wants me to be there," she said, "so I can tell him about it."
