Somalis not welcome in Barrow County
WINDER, Ga. - Barrow County has made it official: The Somali Olympic team is not welcome. The county's Chamber of Commerce voted Monday not to allow the Somalis to train here next year because some residents were upset at the way American troops were treated in the African nation.
Muster seeded fifth at French Open
PARIS - Thomas Muster, the hottest player on clay this year, will be seeded fifth when the French Open starts May 29.
Muster is unbeaten in 28 matches on the surface this year, extending his streak through five tournaments.
The seedings, announced by the organizing committee, are based on the latest ATP rankings. Muster is No. 5 on the chart and Bruguera No. 7.
The top seeds are Andre Agassi, the winner of the last two Grand Slam tournaments, and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, the defending champion.
Germany defeats U.S. in Team Cup
DUESSELDORF, Germany - Karsten Braasch and Patrike Kuehnen beat Richey Reneberg and Jared Palmer 1-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 to give Germany a 2-1 victory over the United States in the World Team Cup. In singles, Germany's Michael Stich beat Todd Martin 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 and MaliVai Washington defeated Karsten Braasch 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).
Jets set to stay in Winnipeg
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Winnipeg Jets are staying put, but for how long and at what price remains to be seen. The Winnipeg Free Press reported today that construction on a 16,000-seat arena will begin in a few weeks and the team will be run under expanded ownership.
Nordiques appear headed for Denver
QUEBEC - Quebec Nordiques president Marcel Aubut was to meet today with Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau in a last-ditch attempt to keep the franchise in the provincial capital, Radio-Canada reported. A Denver group is reportedly close to announcing it has purchased the Nordiques for $75 million.
Las Vegas to host Davis Cup semifinal
LONDON - Las Vegas and Moscow will host the semifinals of this year's Davis Cup matches, the International Tennis Federation announced Monday. Las Vegas, home of world No. 1 Andre Agassi, will be the site of the United States' match with defending champion Sweden.

Utahn becomes youngest black belt
Six-year-old Stephen Hart earned his 1st Dan Black Belt in tae kwon do at Salt Lake's Olympic Tae Kwon Do School this past January to become the youngest black belt of his rank in the nation.
Because of Hart's accomplishments, he was presented the Presidential Sports Award this past Saturday. The award is given for dedication and determination to an active life and participation in sports.
Youth hockey leauge plans registration
PROVO - Youth up to the age of 17 can play ice hockey - whether experienced or not - this fall and winter in the Timpanogos Amateur Hockey Association.
Registration for the 1995-96 season will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, at Utah Lake State Park Visitor Center, 10 a.m.-noon for returning players and 1-4 p.m. for newcomers. Players must have skates, helmet with facemask, shoulder and elbow pads, pants, shin guards, gloves and sticks. Fee is $185, or $170 if paid on the registration date. It includes ice time, jerseys and accident insurance. All youths must have a parent or guardian present at registration to sign forms.
Age groups include Mites (8-under), Squirts (10-under), Pee Wees (12-under), Bantams (14-under) and Midgets (15-17).

State volleyball tourney starts today
Salt Lake County Recreation's state high school boys volleyball tournament begins today and concludes Thursday at Valley Jr. High, with the state title match slated for 8 p.m.
Taylorsville and Olympus headline the 16-team field as top seeds from the circuit's two regions. Both squads, along with teams from Hunter and Skyline, finished league play with 6-1 records.
