AL honors Cordova
NEW YORK - Marty Cordova, who homered in five consecutive games for the Minnesota Twins, was selected AL player of the week on Monday and Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros was NL player of the week.
Cordova played with the Salt Lake Buzz of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League during the 1994 season.
Cordova's homer streak tied the major league rookie record set by Rudy York of the Detroit Tigers in 1937 and matched by George Aiusik of the Kansas City Athletics in 1962 and Ron Kittle of the Chicago White Sox in 1983.
Cordova's five homers and 13 RBIs led the AL last week. He went 10-for-27 (.370).
Biggio was 9-for-27 (.429) with four doubles, one homer, five RBIs and five runs scored.
Admiral is NBA's MVP
NEW YORK - David Robinson, who led San Antonio to the NBA's best regular-season record, won the league's Most Valuable Player award today.
Robinson, who averaged 27.6 points, 10.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game, beat runner-up Shaquille O'Neal of Orlando by a wide margin. Robinson received 73 first-place votes and 901 points, while O'Neal got 12 firsts and 605 points from a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.
Utah's Karl Malone was third, followed by New York's Patrick Ewing, Houston's Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley of Phoenix, Chicago's Scottie Pippen and Utah's John Stockton.
Robinson ranked third in the NBA in scoring, fourth in blocks and seventh in rebounding.
