To save money on drugs, the Berkeley Wellness Letter suggests asking your doctor about the possibility of prescribing pills that are double your needed dose, which you can then cut in half. Often a pill that's twice as potent costs only 25 to 50 percent more.

Of course this strategy won't work on every pill, and you must be careful to make sure you cut each one evenly in half. Most pills come scored with a line for easy cutting, and the Wellness Letter suggests buying an inexpensive pill cutter to do the job.An additional tip is to cut all the medicines into the correct dosage size at once. That way, if you are taking more than one medication, there will be no confusion and the possibility of accidental overdose will be nil.
