A massive mudslide buried hundreds of grave markers at the Orem City Cemetery Friday morning just as it was being prepared for numerous Memorial Day weekend visitors.
A 30-foot-wide river of mud cut a swath across the north end of the cemetery, 1520 N. 800 West, and moved west across an adjacent road. About 25 Orem City public works employees were shoveling brown goo into trucks Friday morning.A contractor digging a water line on a hill north of the cemetery is likely responsible for the sliding water and dirt, said Alan Sundquist, cemetery sexton.
The heavy mud moving across the already saturated lawn, caused the ground-level grave markers to sink into the ground. Orem officials estimate cleanup and refurbishing will cost thousands of dollars.
