Wrestlers top academics

For the second straight year and third time since 1992, BYU's wrestling team has been named the top academic squad in the NCAA by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

BYU's team grade point average for 1994-95 was 3.332, followed by Stanford at 3.21, Wyoming at 3.11, James Madison at 3.05 and Bucknell at 2.96 in figures just released by the NWCA.

BYU heavyweight wrestler Sean Ponce, a senior, was named to the 10-man All-Academic first team with a 3.80 cumulative GPA. Utah

Ute sluggers down Lobos

The University of Utah baseball team picked up a 13-12 comeback victory over the University of New Mexico Tuesday afternoon on a muddy Ute field.

Rightfielder Justin Johnson sparked the Ute comeback with a leadoff double in the sixth inning as Utah rocked the Lobo pitching staff for eight runs in the sixth inning, five were scored with two-outs. Batting for the second time in the sixth inning, Johnson touched Lobo starter Scott Purse with a three-run homer, giving the Utes a 12-8 lead.

New Mexico tied the contest scoring four runs in the eighth inning, including a two-run home run by catcher Jamie Garcia. The Utes battled back in the eighth inning, rallying with two outs.

The Utes (10-31, 2-14) meet Brigham Young in a three game series beginning with a nine-inning contest at 1 p.m. Friday at Ute field. The rivals will play a 5 p.m. double-header Saturday at Franklin Quest Field.

Track meet Saturday

Both Weber State's men's and women's track teams will compete this Saturday at a scoring meet hosted by Boise State University.

The men will be scored in a triangular meet between Boise State, Weber State and Portland State while the women will compete in a scored quadrangular meet between Boise State, Weber State, Idaho and Portland State.

Spikers to host tourney

As part of Weber State University's 26th Annual Founders' Day Celebration on May 5-6, Weber State's volleyball team will host a Celebrity Volleyball match on Friday, May 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Dee Events Center. The match is open to the public free of charge.
