Hill Air Force Base will almost surely be added Wednesday to the base closure consideration list - but that's probably good, Utah officials say.
And two California depots competing for survival against Defense Depot Ogden will also likely be added - which Utah officials say is even better.Bill Johnson, aide to Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, said staff of the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission warned Hansen that all air logistics centers - including Hill - will almost surely be added to its study list to make the closure selection fair but that they would prefer to close air logistics centers at McClellan Air Force Base in Sacramento and Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Johnson said Wednesday's news will likely upset Hill supporters. "But if they close Kelley or (McClellan), it will bring more work to Hill in the long run."
Johnson said the Tracy-Sharpe depot complex in California will likely be added Wednesday to the study list, joining DDO. If they were not added to the list, then DDO would surely close.
