Gunman sentenced
BOGOTA, Colombia - The gunman who killed a soccer star after his blunder in a game against the United States helped eliminate Colombia from the World Cup was sentenced Friday to 43 years in prison.
Humberto Munoz Castro shot Andres Escobar on July 2, 1994, outside a bar in Medellin, 155 miles northwest of Bogota.
Days earlier, Escobar accidentally kicked the ball into his own net in a 2-1 first-round loss that eliminated the team from the World Cup.

Prep soccer star dies
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A high school soccer star who survived a near-fatal traffic accident last year, died a week after suffering a heart attack on the field, his family said Friday.
Leighton Langston, 18, had been in a coma since he collapsed during a game June 23 at Boca Ciega High School, which he attended.
An organ-transplant team was standing by when Langston's life support equipment was stopped late Thursday night at Seminole's University General Hospital.

Heat advance at tourney
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Utah Heat (13-under) basketball team advanced to the national AAU age-group quarterfinals Friday by beating the Missouri Valley Spartans 75-43. The Utah team will play Memphis today at 1 p.m. Should they win, they would have a semifinal game later today.
Utahns make U.S. teams
OKLAHOMA CITY - The state of Utah will be well represented in the men's division of the U.S. Olympic Festival softball next month in Denver, Colo. Fifteen players and two coaches from the Beehive State have been selected to participate on various teams at the tournament.
The 15 players were among 60 chosen from more than 200 respondents who filed applications to compete in the festival from July 22 to July 26. The 60 players were divided into four teams to represent geographical regions of the U.S.
The players from Utah were Derrick Sorensen, Travis Latey, Christopher Ehlers, John Rees and Michael Aranzullo from Salt Lake City; Trevor Wallace, West Jordan; Cody Alvey, Brett Alvey, Brian Lehrman, Henry Hathway, MIke LaOrange and Tyler Perry from Sandy; Kurt Brey and Kyle Magnusson from Murray; and Ryan Mayne from West Valley City.
Bountiful's Ken Hackmeister and Taylorsville's Dennis Rose were chosen to be coaches at the festival.
