A Taylorsville man is accused of kidnapping three children at knife point and then sexually abusing one of them.
William Michael Thomas, 22, faces three counts of aggravated kidnapping and one count of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies.Prosecutors say he led two sisters, ages 3 and 5, and a 4-year-old boy from a pool in their apartment complex to his apartment, where he molested the youngest sister, according to charges filed in 3rd Circuit Court.
Thomas had played with the children before in the apartment, 4760 S. 2200 West, which is rented by his mother, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Vaughn.
"They (the children) apparently had been there several times to play with toys there," Vaughn said. He would not reveal where the children's parents were at the time of the alleged kidnappings and abuse.
Thomas was discovered by his sister, who told deputies she returned to the apartment on the afternoon of July 11 and knocked on the door for 10 minutes before her brother answered.
The sister noticed Thomas' hair was wet and about 30 minutes later saw the three children climb from a closet in the apartment. One of the girls was crying and her hair was wet.
Police later searched the apartment and found a knife matching the descriptions provided to them by the children, according to a search warrant. Thomas was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
