It's not the Grammys, but this could be the start of something big.

Sandy Howell, 28, an amateur songwriter who lives in Los Angeles, won the Grand Prize in the Sixth Annual Billboard Song Contest, for a song she composed in 10 minutes.The final selection was made by Quincy Jones, the Grammy and Academy award-winning composer who was the chairman of a panel of judges for the contest, sponsored by Billboard magazine.

Howell will receive a BMG Music publishing contract, a $5,000 check and a Gibson Chet Akins SST guitar, among other prizes.

"I told my boyfriend that it's only an amateur contest," Howell said by telephone. "And he said, `So are the Olympics!' "
