New principals will be at the helm of two Sevier School District schools this year, the appointments recently confirmed by the board of education.
It was also announced that students who plan to go on to college can save $8,000 by earning one year's college credit while in high school.Bart Reynolds will replace Ron Utley as principal at Salina Elementary School and Elaine Wayland will succeed Elwood Willis at Monroe Elementary. Utley and Willis retired.
Reynolds has been assistant principal of Wasatch Middle School in Heber City, where he was district science and music chairman and responsible for the adult education program.
Wayland has been teaching at the Pahvant school and is president of the Sevier Education Association. She was selected for the district's administrative intern program, working in the 1989-90 school year at Pahvant Elementary, Richfield High School and the district office.
Reynolds earned a bachelors degree from Southern Utah University and a masters degree with emphasis on administration from Brigham Young University.
Wayland earned her bachelors degree from Southern Utah State College and a masters degree in educational leadership from BYU.
Administrators should build teachers so that they will build the students, Wayland said. "Parents need to be true partners." Reynolds said he feels ready to make "significant contributions to the school, faculty and community."
Meanwhile, assistant superintendent Duane Bresee urged high school students to consider taking college courses that are offered by Snow College.
"It's important that students and parents understand that grades earned for courses go on their student's permanent university record." That could save one year of college expenses.
He said students won't be charged tuition for the college program because it will be picked up by the district. Special funds were received from the state, which will be used for instruction and textbooks.
