I'm constantly being told how terrific the Utah talent pool is . . . and that certain performers could make it big on Broadway. And, yes, I do see some outstanding talent on stages throughout the region.

Well, here's your chance to find out for yourself. But instead of having to travel to New York, local performers need only travel downtown when the producers of "Les Miserables" will be holding auditions in Salt Lake City on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 22-23, for both adults and children.

All auditions will be held at the Red Lion Hotel, 255 S. West Temple. Signup begins at 9:30 a.m. both days and the auditions will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. All those auditioning must be signed up by no later than 10:30 a.m.

- Adult auditions will be held on Tuesday. Very strong singers are required. Come prepared with a contemporary pop or theater song. The producers suggest using music in the style of "Chess" or that of Andrew Lloyd Webber (but not "Phantom of the Opera"), Sondheim, Rupert Holmes, Amanda McBroom, Billy Joel, "Little Shop of Horrors," etc.

No British accents, please.

Men should have strong voices and women should be strong "belters." Many sopranos are also needed. Bring your own sheet music. An accompanist will be provided (do not bring a tape recorder).

- Children's tryouts are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug 23.

The roles include Little Cosette, a sweet, innocent waif requiring a pretty soprano voice, and Gavroche, a spunky street urchin with lots of personality and who sings very well. Boys and girls in the 7-11 age range are required for both roles. Girls should be about 50 inches in height or less. Boys should be in the 50- to 55-inch range.

All children should bring a recent photograph stapled to a resume that lists singing and acting experience or training. Bring your own sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. Previous professional experience is not required. The songs that each character sings in the show can be heard on the Broadway cast recording, available in local record stores.

Children and their parents or guardians must be willing to relocate to New York City or to travel on a tour.
