A Roy man died Thursday afternoon when he stepped out of his car on I-15 after it struck a concrete construction barrier and was run down by a semitrailer truck.
The Utah Highway Patrol also has released the name of a Sandy man who was killed when his tractor-trailer unit overturned on I-15 two miles north of Mona, Juab County, on Aug. 4.Killed in the accidents were:
Randy L. Fiese, 41, Roy.
Bradley VanTassell, 40, Sandy.
The Utah Highway Patrol said Fiese was northbound on I-15 at the Burke Lane interchange in Farmington and struck a concrete barrier installed as part of the freeway's reconstruction project.
His car, a 1985 Pontiac Fiero, was blocking the northbound traffic lanes when he got out, according to UHP, and was struck by a semitrailer truck driven by Jose M. Iturburu, 43, of Boise.
Fiese was dead at the scene, UHP reported. No citations were issued, and troopers report the investigation is still being conducted.
The accident occurred at 2:20 p.m., but the northbound traffic lanes on the freeway were closed for more than two hours, backing up later rush hour traffic for several miles.
- Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Charlie Wilson said VanTassell had been following a motor home on the northbound inside lane of the freeway. The motor home was changing lanes and VanTassell ran into the back of a Ford Taurus that he apparently could not see. The Ford was knocked into the median by the impact.
VanTassell's truck then traveled back over both lanes and turned upside down. It took extrication workers more than two hours to free VanTassell from the wreckage.
Two people in the Ford Taurus were treated at Central Valley Medical Center.
VanTassell was hauling a load of turf from the Phillip's Turf Farm in Levan.
