MEXICAN DIRECTOR TAKES AIM AT `PEON' STEREOTYPES

Alfonso Arau is gunning for the Hollywood stereotype of Mexicans.

The 63-year-old director of "Like Water for Chocolate" and "A Walk in the Clouds" said American movies usually portray Mexicans as "peons, illiterates, banditos, dope dealers, servants and prostitutes.""In both `Water' and `Clouds,' I have presented to American audiences another aspect of the Mexican culture: its upper-class, sophisticated and educated families," Arau said in Friday's editions of The Orange County (Calif.) Register.
