Judge Lance Ito and the family of Ronald Goldman called writer Dominick Dunne last week to express concern about his then missing son.

Alex Dunne, 38, was stranded on a mountainside for nearly a week after twisting an ankle and falling 25 feet down a hillside while hiking in Coronado National Forest. He managed to hike to safety Thursday. The elder Dunne left the O.J. Simpson trial, which he has been covering for Vanity Fair magazine, to help in the search.

"I've now become part of the O.J. story - I'm now one of the subplots," he said.

Alex's older brother, actor-filmmaker Griffin Dunne, also joined in the search.

The elder Dunne said he plans to incorporate the ordeal into a book he is writing about the people involved in the trial. Simpson is accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Goldman, her friend.

In 1982, his daughter, Dominique, was slain by a former boyfriend in Los Angeles shortly after completing her first movie role, in "Poltergeist."
