THREAT OF TERRORISM TRIGGERS TIGHT SECURITY AT N.Y. AIRPORTS

A threat of terrorist attack by Middle Eastern militants, possibly a "suicide massacre," had Kennedy International Airport under unprecedented security Monday.

Security also was tightened at the metropolitan area's two other major airports: LaGuardia and Newark. The actions were based on information from law enforcement agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement Sunday.

A State Department official who requested anonymity told The New York Times that "whatever threats we have received" have come from within the United States.

The FAA wouldn't give further details, and FBI spokesman Joe Valiquette also would not comment.
