SENTENCING FOR PEARSON DELAYED IN EMERY COUNTY

Sentencing for Jason Scott Pearson was delayed Tuesday in 7th District Court after a court reporter failed to show.

Pearson, 20, who was already given life in prison for the shooting death of Utah Highway Patrol trooper Dennis "Dee" Lund, was to be sentenced Tuesday for four remaining convictions con-nected to the 1993 pursuit on I-70 near Green River. In July, a 12-member Emery County jury found Pearson guilty of capital murder as well as two counts of attempted aggravated murder and a single count each of aggravated assault and failure to stop for a police officer.

Lund was fatally shot June 16, 1993, as he tried to stop Pearson and a friend as the duo sped cross-country to avoid trouble in their home state of Indiana. Pearson was 18 at the time of the shooting.

The defense had requested a specific court reporter throughout the case to provide verbatim records of the proceedings. That person had inadvertently not been notified of the Tuesday court date and was not present. Pearson will now have to wait until Oct. 17 to be sentenced.
