LIGHTNING KILLS WOMAN DURING CASTLE ROCK CLIMB

Lightning struck two people climbing Castle Rock near Moab, killing one.

The fatal victim, a woman whose age and name were not released, was killed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Grand County sheriff's office said. Her male companion was knocked unconscious by the lightning strike but woke up and was otherwise uninjured. The storm quickly swept through Utah but left little rain, said Larry Burch, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service office in Salt Lake City.

A brief downpour flooded the Zion Narrows in Zion National Park in southwestern Utah, and winds in the Kearns area of Salt Lake Valley gusted to 54 mph.

High winds and lightning strikes knocked out power in areas of Bountiful, Brigham City, Ogden, Salt Lake City and West Valley City.
