JAPANESE WAR APOLOGY CIRCULATED AT U.N.

A statement made Tuesday by Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Mu-ra-ya-ma apologizing for his country's actions during World War II was circulated Thursday as an official U.N. document at the request of Japan's U.N. mission.

In an accompanying note, Japanese U.N. Ambassador Hisashi Owada said he was acting on the instructions of his government.Security Council sources said this week that China's representative, Ambassador Qin Huasan, told colleagues he would request U.N. circulation of Murayama's statement if Japan did not do so itself.

The Japanese prime minister, in his statement, spoke of his country's "colonial rule and aggression" during World War II and offered his "heartfelt apology."
