A word of advice from Gail Sheehy: Plan to have several careers and retire at age 75.

Sheehy, whose best-seller "New Passages" examines the lives of middle-age men and women, says a new outlook is needed because people are taking much longer to grow up and much longer to die."The Social Security retirement age should probably be increased in gradual stages to 75," she told Parade magazine.

"In the meantime, people should plan on `retiring' two or three times in their lives, each time phasing in a new career before they give up their old one."
