FIRE CREWS TAME OLYMPUS AND CEDAR POCKET BLAZES

The 12,987-acre Cedar Pocket fire 15 miles southwest of St. George and the 100-acre fire on Mount Olympus were both controlled Monday, ahead of schedule.

Crews are still working to control the 4,125-acre Triangle Fire that burned across the Utah border east of Moab into Colorado. That fire forced the overnight evacuation of 10 ranch homes Sunday and is expected to be contained by Friday.Utah County's Black Beard fire, which jumped containment lines west of Utah Lake on Monday, is expected to be under control by Tuesday evening.

Also in Utah County, firefighters from three jurisdictions battled an arson-caused brush fire Tuesday night above Alpine Cove for almost four hours.

When the blaze was contained at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday it had burned about two acres of U.S. Forest Service land. Fire officials say the cool, calm air and quick response from Alpine firefighters kept the blaze from threatening any homes.

Crews in San Juan County on Tuesday were still working to control several fires: a 60-acre blaze in Brushy Basin five miles west of Blanding, the Coal Bed fire 15 miles east of Blanding, and an eight-acre fire 14 miles east of Monticello.
