Soccer fans, police clash; 102 injured

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - Rival fans fought with sticks and attacked police Sunday, canceling the main soccer match on the first weekend of the Brazilian national championship.

Fans attending a preliminary match between the junior teams of the city's Sao Paulo and Palmeiras clubs began battling each other with sticks and bricks.

When state police tried to control the clash, it became a free-for-all. The battle injured 22 state troopers and 80 fans, according to the CBN radio network.

The Paulista Soccer Federation canceled the juniors game and main match scheduled between Sao Paulo state champion Corinthians and Bragantino.

Lack of funding kills Freedom Bowl

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Freedom Bowl has been canceled this season and probably is off for good after organizers of the college football game failed to secure necessary funding.

The Orange County Sports Association, which organized the game for the last 11 years at Anaheim Stadium, revised a proposal to have the NCAA certify the game - to be renamed the Big Orange Classic - after learning some needed funds would not be available.

"We had reason to believe we were very close to securing the necessary dollars to have the game in '95," said Jerry McGee, the association's executive director.
