From Clay Brown and Gordon Hudson to David Mills, Chris Smith and Byron Rex BYU football teams under LaVell Edwards have always seemed to have outstanding tight ends.

This year will be no exception. The Cougars have two all-WAC caliber players at that position - juniors Chad Lewis and Itula Mili. Both Lewis and Mili were major contributors to last season's 10-3 team, providing a one-two punch at tight end. Lewis caught 32 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns, while Mili had 33 catches for 503 yards and four scores."Chad Lewis and Itula Mili are two of the best tight ends we've ever had," BYU coach LaVell Edwards said. "We've had some great, All-American tight ends. I don't know if they'll be named All-American, but they're both extremely talented."

So this year, much to the chagrin of WAC defensive coordinators, Lewis and Mili will often be on the field together. The Cougars have dusted off the H-back position, after several years in moth balls, and given it to Mili.

The H-back is sort of the hybrid of a tight end, fullback and slot receiver. Depending on the play, the 6-4, 235-pound Mili will line up in different places and will often be in motion.

"It's going to be great to be on the field as the same time as Itula," Lewis said. "He's an incredible athlete. That dude was born to play football."

As for the wide receivers, it's a familiar story for the Cougars. They have a bunch of guys with good hands who run good routes, but don't have the blazing speed of the receivers at, say, Fresno State and San Diego State.

Last year's top two wideouts, Tim Nowatzke and Bryce Doman, graduated. Leading the pack this year is senior Mike Johnston, who caught 31 passes for 423 yards in '94. Kaipo McGuire, Jason Cooper and Tyler Bolli also return. A pair of junior college transfers stars - Ben Cahoon from Ricks and K.O. Kealaluhi from Grossmont College in San Diego - will help the receiving corps immediately.

The tight ends would rate an A in comparison to the others in the league, with the wide receivers a solid B. Combined, the group is somewhere in between.
