A new era in Runnin' Ute sports will be launched on Sun-day.

A new television era, that is."Ute Sunday with Ron McBride" - the successor to KUED's long-running coach's show - will debut with an hourlong broadcast on Sunday at 5 p.m. on Ch. 14. It's the first installment in KJZZ's new contract with the Utes.

Joining football coach Ron McBride will be former KUTV-Ch. 2 sportscaster Bill Marcroft. The debut will run for an hour, but regular installments will be 30 minutes beginning Sept. 3. (And, when basketball season arrives, it will become "Ute Sunday with Rick Majerus.)

Ch. 14's first broadcast of a Ute football game will be the Sept. 2 home game against Oregon. KJZZ has hired a familar face as the play-by-play announcer - Steve Brown, the former KTVX-Ch. 4 sportscaster who's been doing Ch. 14's Jazz studio show for the past couple of years.

Brown will be joined in the football broadcast booth by two color commentators - former Jazz coach Frank Layden and former Snow College, Kansas and Cincinnati Bengal gridder Mike Norseth.

Former Ute defensive back Sharrieff Shah will do sideline reports.

Brown and Layden will also team up for Ute basketball broadcasts.

UTES ON THE TUBE: The Utah vs. Oregon game will be the first of five on KJZZ-Ch. 14, and the Utes' season-ender at BYU will be seen on KSL-Ch. 5.

Currently, no Ute games are scheduled for either network or cable broadcast, but - as with every season - it's possible that some games could be picked up by ABC or ESPN at a later date.

Here's the current rundown on the U.'s TV schedule:

Sept. 2: Oregon at Utah (7 p.m., Ch. 14)

Sept. 16: Utah at New Mexico (6 p.m., Ch. 14)

Sept. 30: Utah at Texas-El Paso (7 p.m., Ch. 14)

Nov. 4: Utah at Wyoming (noon, Ch. 14)

Ch. 14 will also broadcast one additional home game, which will be announced at a later date.

BYU ON THE TUBE: As usual, Cougar fans will be able to see all of BYU's games on TV - if they subscribe to cable.

And providing they subscribe to the right cable system. The Sept. 30 game at Colorado State is scheduled for ESPN2 - which is not available to most Utah cable subscribers. TCI is in discussions with the cable channel as to the possibility of cablecasting the game, however.
