Steven King, a Salt Lake School District building and maintenance employee, digs up grass surrounding the "E" near East High School, where West High students poured gasoline on the grass to complete the spelling of West. Vandals also painted over the "E" with red paint. Damage was estimated at about $3,000, district spokeswoman Sherri Clark said. But apparently marking their territory in advance of the rival East-West football game Friday afternoon at West High, vandals also seared an "E" into the turf at West's football field with rock salt. Both principles will meet with student athletes and student officers to discuss consequences of vandalism, which could include suspension of athletic eligibility and referral to law enforcement agencies. However, there are no confirmed suspects in either incident, Clark said. Future vandalism would be handled under the district's discipline policy.
