Wayne County Sheriff Don Torgerson was in critical condition at LDS Hospital after undergoing heart-transplant surgery that concluded early Friday morning.

Hospital spokeswoman Shannon Reed said his condition is typical following such surgery. The donor heart was implanted during a 71/2-hour procedure that began about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.Reed said Torgerson had been waiting for a donor heart since July, following a massive heart attack that required the implant of a heart-mate unit.

Torgerson became the county's sheriff in January.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Douglas Bliss assumed his duties as sheriff following Torgerson's heart attack on July 12. But Torgerson has kept close tabs on the office from his hospital bed.

Wayne and neighboring Sevier County residents have donated their time and money to help pay for his transplant, which is expected to cost about $350,000.
