PATHMARK CLASSIC: Second-seeded Jana Novotna, deprived of her serve and volley game by strong winds, took control in the third set and advanced to the semi-finals of the Pathmark Classic with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 victory over Iva Majoli on Friday.

WORLD SERIES OF GOLF: Jim Gallagher Jr. avoided the pitfalls that befell playing partner Payne Stewart and retained a one-stroke lead Friday through two rounds of the World Series of Golf at Akron, Ohio.

"Par's a good score, to say the least," Gallagher said after a 71 leaft him at 3-under 137. He started the round with a one-stroke lead over Stewart after opening with a 66 at parched and hard Firestone Country Club.

One Shot back were defending champion Jose Maria Olazabal, Billy Mayfair and Mike Sullivan.

U.S. AMATEUR: Defending champion Tiger Woods won two matches Friday to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur. His victories were overshadowed by those of another teen-ager who's trying to replace him as the youngest Amateur champion.

SENIORS: The winds blew and the scores soared as five golfers posted 3-under-par 69s Friday to share the first-round lead of the $800,000 Bank of Boston Senior Classic at Concord, Mass.

George Archer, Rocky Thompson, Iaso Aoki, Jim Colbert and Buddy Allin all took different routes to the top of the leaderboard.

LPGA: The winds calmed, the clouds disappeared and it was Liselotte Neumann's day to shine at the du Maurier Classic.

While first-round leader Patty Sheehan was coming apart, Neumann had a bogey-free 66 Friday to take a three-shot lead after two rounds of the LPGA Tour's last of four major championships.
