BYU: REPORT CARD

Bill Hansen, the new BYU placekicker, has been impressive at times the past couple of weeks. He nailed two long field goals in two chances during the first scrimmage of fall camp and had a 53-yarder in Thursday's scrimmage.

But Hansen, a senior who understudied behind David Lauder last season, left some doubt Thursday as well. He missed a pair of 42-yard field goals and an extra point."(Hansen's) pretty accurate up to 40 yards and he has decent range," Cougar coach LaVell Edwards said. "He's hit a couple of 50 yarders (in practice). I think he's going to be all right. Of course the proof of the pudding is what he does in games."

Hansen was an all-conference kicker/punter at Dixie College in 1992, when he averaged 39 yards per punt, made 26-of-30 extra points and was 9-for-16 (.563) in field goal attempts with a long of 45 yards.

Hansen will also handle the kickoff duties. The Cougars' backup place kicker is junior college transfer Courtney Smith, who was 8-9 in field goals and 42-47 in PATs at Ricks last season.

The Cougars have a solid returning punter in junior Alan Boardman, who was second in the WAC last season (26th in the nation), averaging 41.7 yards per boot. Boardman was even better in his first season when averaged 43 yards per punt as a freshman in '93.

Morris Unutoa has been BYU's deep snapper for two years now. Unutoa will continue his long snapping job this year in addition to being the starting center.

James Dye, the speedy transfer from Utah State, will return both punts and kickoffs for the Cougars. Dye was second team all-Big West as a return specialist in '93. He led the league with a 12.2-yard punt return average and had kickoff returns of 47 and 41 yards.

Senior receiver Mike Johnston, who has been BYU's leading punt returner the past three years, will continue to return punts. Last season he averaged 6.1 yards per return. Senior wide receiver Jason Cooper will return kickoffs again. Cooper had a team-high 15 kickoff returns last year for an average of 19.8 yards and a long of 50.
