AOKI LEADS BOSTON CLASSIC - BEE STING AND ALL

Fighting off the effects of a bee sting, Isao Aoki fired a 6-under-par 66 Saturday for a two-stroke lead after the second round lead of the Bank of Boston Senior Classic.

With a 36-hole total of 9-under-par 135, Aoki holds a two-shot lead over the trio of Hale Irwin, Mike McCullough and Bob Charles, who were at 7-under. Buddy Allin was at 6-under for 36 holes in the $800,000 tournament at Nashawtuc Country Club.Heber City's Bruce Summerhays shot a 69 to be at 3-under.

Aoki was stung by two bees near the sixth green on Friday and was still feeling the effects on Saturday with his right arm swollen just below the elbow.

"It is hot," said Aoki, holding a bag of ice to his arm. "It still itches a lot and has been bothering me.

"I tried to use ice Friday, but I was losing the feel in my hand, so today I didn't use anything while I was playing."

Aoki was able to overcome any problems after starting the day with a three-putt bogey on No. 1.

Aoki nearly holed out his 3-wood second shot on the fifth hole and rolled in a 3-foot putt for an eagle.

He nearly holed out a 9-iron for an eagle on No. 6, making the ensuing two-inch birdie putt.

Aoki then rolled in birdie putts on Nos. 8, 10 and 11 to move into the lead for the tournament.

He held that one-shot lead until 18 when he rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt to extend his margin to two shots heading into Sunday's final round.

Walt Zembriski shot a 3-under 69 to win the $15,000 Super Senior segment of the tournament by one shot over Miller Barber.
