UTAHN IS RUNNER-UP IN MRS. U.S. EVENT

A Hawaii woman is the new Mrs. United States, who was crowned in Las Vegas last week, while a Utah woman was named first runner-up.

Pam Whiting, who was Mrs. Hawaii, will receive $3,000 in cash and some sponsorship gifts. She also will make public appearances for nonprofit organizations, said pageant spokesman Richard Erwin. Whiting's hometown was unknown.Janae Dibble of Mantua, Box Elder County, Utah, was first runner-up; Sherry Strother of Yukon, Okla., was second runner-up; Linda Watts of Yakima, Wash., was third runner-up; and Janice Elaine Mobley of Buffalo, N.Y., was fourth runner-up.

The all-week event, in its ninth year, at the Sahara hotel-casino ended Thursday and included married contestants from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
