2 RUNAWAY GIRLS INJURED WHEN STOLEN CAR HITS TREE

Two runaway teenage girls driving a stolen car were injured when they ran into a tree following a brief chase Monday afternoon. The two girls, ages 13 and 14, ran away from the Clinton Youth Home and apparently stole the car in Ogden, according to Bountiful police.

The chase started about 3:30 p.m. when an officer saw the car run a stop sign at 2400 S. Main, police said. A chase followed, with the driver hitting speeds of between 40 mph and 45 mph in a 35 mph area, police said.It ended when the driver tried to make a right turn at 775 W. Orchard Drive in North Salt Lake and ran into a tree, according to police. Both the driver, 14, and her passenger, 13, had to be extricated from the car.

The driver is reported in good condition at Lakeview Hospital and the passenger, taken to LDS Hospital by medical helicopter, is reported in stable condition with a broken leg and head lacerations.

Police determined the car, a 1986 Lebaron, was stolen after 11 p.m. Monday in Ogden.
