INTERMOUNTAIN TEAM POSTS TENNIS UPSET

The Utah-supported Intermountain tennis team posted a major upset Wednesday in the USTA's Intersectional Team Championships by beating No. 3 seeded Florida, 5-2.

In matches played Wednesday, Ogden's Adrien Alder beat Florida's Tammy Encina, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, and Megan Payne of St. George, beat Florida's Ellie Lewis, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, in singles.In doubles, Salt Lake's Kim Kelly and Payne won, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Alder and Brenda Vlasak of Westminster, Colo., won the second doubles match. Vlasak also won her singles match. The fifth member of the team is Jill Katzenberger of Denver.

The Intermountain team will now play the No. 1 and 2 teams, Western and Southern, respectively, in the final rounds.

The event is open to the top ranked players, 18 and under, from the 17 sections throughout the U.S.
