The Larry H. Miller Toyota fastpitch softball team arrived here today for its final tuneup before the International Softball Congress World Tournament.
The ISC Tournament starts Aug. 11 in Sioux City, Iowa. This weekend, however, No. 5-rated Miller Toyota (63-8) will battle the Vista Bombers, and Santa Barbara in the Santa Barbara Tournament.
Miller Toyota plays Vista at 10 a.m. (MST) and Santa Barbara at noon Saturday.
"It was depressing to go to Tampa (Florida) for a four-game series only to be rained out," Miller Toyota coach Brad Burrup.
"We really needed the work, too, against top pitching like Marty Grant (the Smokers' ace)," said Burrup. "That's why we make trips like this. We want to face the best. We want to be ready for the ISC.
"And you can only do that by facing the top pitchers. We'll see a some good pitchers this weekend."
Said Mike Mink last weekend, the Smokers' leftfielder, "Miller Toyota doesn't have to earn our respect. They already have it. This is the best hitting team I think they've ever had. And Dwayne Dyck (25-0, .87 ERA) is having a great year. Peter Meredith (24-4, 1.02 ERA) is and always has been great.
"And they've added Bill Hillhouse (14-4, 2.23 ERA) to their pitching staff. They've got the complete club this year."
NOTES: Salt Lake City's Page Brake will play in a tournament in Tucson, Ariz., this weekend to qualify for the ASA National Tournament. The ASA, which had a 36-team field last year in Palm Springs, CA., will only have a 24-team field this year in Midland, Mich., in September.
