A new management style is being credited for Mountain America Credit Union becoming the country's top lender during 1994 among credit unions with more than $100 million in assets.
The Credit Union Times, the credit union industry's trade publication, recently featured Mountain American Credit Union for its success in lending. It included an interview with credit union leader Gordon Dames. In order for the $400 million credit union to reach its level of success, officials identified the needs of members and then delivered the service, Dames said.
Since he became president four years ago, loans have increased, share accounts have grown and new branches have been opened. The credit union ranks ninth in growth of share accounts and the loss ratio of .2 percent on loans is lower than the average of the top credit unions, said Dames.
