Stepping off an airplane at the Salt Lake International Airport, one of the first things passengers see are signs welcoming them. Until recently, these signs said, "Welcome to Salt Lake City! From the people of Salt Lake City."

Today, welcoming signs give another greeting, "Welcome to Salt Lake City! From Mayor Deedee Corradini." Salt Lake City does not belong to Mayor Corradini, it belongs to all of the citizens of Salt Lake City. Actually, our capital city belongs to all of the citizens of Utah. Why did the mayor take it upon herself to change what had been the customary greeting? It is understandable that the mayor wants her name to be seen in many places. At the time of elections, name recognition is very important to candidates.

The selfish privilege of displaying her name in public places unfairly sets her apart from candidates seeking her office. In taking this special privilege, she is serving herself more than the people of Salt Lake City. For her, it seems more important to be personally recognized than for Salt Lake City to be appreciated for what it has to offer.

I strongly encourage Mayor Corradini to welcome visitors to Salt Lake City in behalf of all the citizens. The welcoming signs at the airport and other prominent public buildings should not display her name.
