CELTICS SIGN BARROS: Point guard Dana Barros, a Boston native and former Boston College star who played for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA last season, returned home today as a member of the Boston Celtics.

During a news conference at team headquarters, the Celtics announced that Barros had signed. The six-year deal reportedly is worth $22 million.

BIDDING WAR: Oakland and San Jose are in a high-stakes bidding war to host the Golden State Warriors, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday. Both cities' offers are about $20 million, the newspaper said, citing sources that it did not identify.

Warriors owner Christopher Cohan wants to move to a bigger building than the 15,000-seat Oakland Coliseum Arena, the smallest in the NBA. Cohan indicates he wants to break ground on a new arena by fall 1996.

Hockey

FLEURY SIGNS: Free agent forward Theo Fleury ended his holdout and signed a five-year deal with the Calgary Flames. Terms were not disclosed Friday but there were reports that Fleury would get as much as $2.5 million a year.

Auto racing

WORLD OF SPEED: Twenty new class records were set Friday on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Terry Nish had a two-way average 322.997 mph in the Vesco-Nish streamliner, and Tim Markley logged the fastest run of the day, driving the Hoffman-Markley streamliner for a 337.502 mph one-way speed and two-way average of 335.626 mph.

There were three new inductees into the 200-mph club. Other notable Salt Lake records included: Steig Svard driving a Triumph TR7 and Chevrolet V6 engine (155.265 two-way average); and Ellen Christensen driving a three-cylinder turbo-charged Chevrolet Spring truned a two-way average of 111.513 mph, erasing the times of her husband, Ron, in the car.

WESTMINSTER WINS: Westminster defeated Northwest Nazarene Friday 2-0 at Nampa, Idaho. Chris Kirkpatrick scored an unassisted goal and Jason Spain was assisted by Brandon Flack for the other.

The Parsons, who are 9-1 on the season, finish their three-game road swing today against National College (Idaho).
